FAQ's

"No judgement, just honest info."

Got a few questions? You’re in the right place. We’ve put together some of the most common things people ask us about harm reduction and ADIO’s services. It’s all here in plain language, no judgement, just the info you need to stay safe and look after yourself.

If you can’t find what you’re after, get in touch— we’re always keen to help.

Do I still have to bring used needles to get new ones?

No — that old one-for-one policy no longer applies. You can take what you need (within reason), even if you don’t bring any used equipment back. We do encourage returns where possible for safety and proper disposal.

Yes — as long as they’re from an authorised provider like ADIO. You are legally allowed to possess injecting equipment for personal use.

What does it mean that ADIO’s service is peer-based?

It means the Needle Exchange Programme was developed by peers who have lived experience of injecting drug use. We uderstand what you’re going through, and are here to support you without judgment.

Yes. If your equipment comes from an authorised provider like ADIO, it’s legal to carry in New Zealand.

Can I stay anonymous?

Absolutely. We don’t ask for names, ID, or any personal details. Our services are 100% confidential.

What happens when I walk into a needle exchange?

You’ll be greeted by a staff member behind the counter. Tell us what you need — we’ll help you get the right equipment and answer any questions you have.

How do I get Naloxone?

Just ask. It’s free and comes with clear instructions. We’ll show you how to use it if you want.

What if I’m not sure what I need?

That’s okay. We’ll help you figure it out — no pressure, no judgment.

Do you help people who don’t inject drugs?

Yes. While we focus on people who inject drugs, we support anyone who uses substances and needs harm reduction, information, or referrals.

Can I get help with housing or healthcare?

We can connect you with trusted services for housing, wound care, addiction support, dental care, and more.

What if I don’t want to come in person?

Use a vending machine or contact us for courier delivery. We’ll work with what feels safe for you.

Where can I find your closest exchange?

Check our Contact page for addresses, phone numbers, and opening hours.

Do you charge for any equipment?

Most items are free. Some supplies (like pH paper or lube) have a low cost — and prices are listed clearly at each location.
